. john king is in cincinnati tonight. john, another poll neck and neck, probably be a very long night on election night. what stood out in that poll to you? >> it is remarkable. if you look deep into the poll, the president might have a slight advantage, but this is a classic swing state and we have a dead heat. the president's getting the democrats. governor romney's getting the republicans so you want to look at the middle. 48% for governor romney. 46% for the president so a dead heat. both candidates are in the state today and will be back to make their case. because of ohio's diversity, what's the demographic composition. among nonwhite voters, he's getting 70% of the vote. cleveland, columbus, here in cincinnati. a growing latino population. the president starts with a head start. the white vote, 44% to 53% for romney. i would say this. if governor romney can keep the white vote closer to 40%, he has a chance and getting minority turnout, that was the president's recipe for success four years ago. >> i know that is so crucial when you look at ohio, what do you see there? >> the r

. i'm also joined by john king in washington, d.c. the electoral college map, how does it add up right now? >> when you talk to the two campaigns, it's as if even though it's one country, they live in parallel universes. both saying they will win tomorrow. the president is ahead in most of the key battleground states. they are down confidence in the obama campaign and don't get too much dispute out of the romney campaign that they will win the state of nevada. then they come to the midwest where you are. they are most confident in the midwest they will carry again. i know republicans watching are saying they'll prove you wrong. they're confident about the state of iowa. that would get the president to 259. takes 270 win. when you ask them about these battleground states, they say they're most confidence about ohio, where you are. the president took that game over. no republicans won the white house without it, but say they're wrong about it. keep it a toss-up. if this happens, if the president won novembevada, iowa wisconsin, could romney get to 270? yes, barely. give florida to

are the latest from the map. john king? >> a lot of question marks the eve of the election. parallel universes if you talk to the campaigns. the obama campaign says we will win most if not all of the battleground states. you don't get much of an argument from the republicans when you say the president will carry nevada. some republicans push back but let's give nevada to the president. hypothetical here, folks. that would put the president at 243 to 206. you need 270 to win. let's see if romney can find the magic to get to 270. the state of iowa, the president will end there. that's his final rally. the president wh a lead there. it's small. the romney campaign says it's still in play but the president has consistently led by a small margin. you will see more and more of that across the midwest. you mentioned governor romney going to cleveland tomorrow. let's look at the latest polling in ohio. no republican ever won the white house without it. mathematically can he get there without it, yes. is it probable, no. here's the latest poll of polls. cnn putting together the average of sev

correspondent john king is over here at the magic wall and the popular vote is one thing. the battleground states very different. >> you have to say wow, we have a dead heat, a nail biter going into the final 48 hours. we're not going to get a map like this. the president had a blowout election four years ago, 53% of the vote, won a lot of states. we can see with certainty that's not going to happen. we have a much more competitive national battlefield. the question is what happens here? we elect a president state by state and the race is 270 and with 48 hours to go here is how we see it, 237, the blue states, light and dark blue, 206, the red states. you can see no one has an easy path to 270. the president has an easier path. the three final rallies will be held in iowa, wisconsin, and ohio. if the president can win just those three states and nothing else on the map changes, look at that. he wins re-election. governor romney could run the board anywhere else. if the president can win iowa, wisconsin and ohio and nothing else changes on the map he is elected to a second term. the preside

you looking at? >> spending. i think this is impossible to call this race. john king just laid it out. mitt romney has a steeper hill to climb. if you look at the 12 battleground states, barack obama is ahead in 9 of the 12 and romney only ahead in three. when you go on the ground, you actually talk to people in the state, i was in ohio this week and it was striking how many republicans on the ground thought they were going to win. they thought they had the enthusiasm. they thought they had the evangelical vote. i think we rely too much on the polls. i think we should wait and see what the voters say. >> there is no doubt that republicans are more enthusiastic this time than they were four years ago. our poll, though, on overall on sort of a national average shows a tie between the parties on that. that wouldn't be good if that held up in the battleground states for mitt romney because what he has to depend onto match the get out the vote effort from the obama campaign, he's got to depend on the natural energy, enthusiasm, of his own troops. if he doesn't have that, then he is really

la bolt called it their nuclear codes. john king back to break down the numbers. >> nuclear code perhaps. they did what they said they would do. go back to your votes, they said they would identify their voters, find them, turn them out. men, 47% shaded red. governor romney won. but women, 53%, if you are winning, as the president did, 55% of the biggest chunk of the election for ate and competitive elsewhere, on the way to winning the election. women vote here. let's slide it over. this is nationally. and it plays out in swing states. a state like colorado, the president won the men's vote as well. men, 51% of the electorate. once a widely republican state in colorado. closer in colorado. the president won by being competitive among women as well and one more. a little touchy, had a tough couple days. 48% in ohio. 52% in ohio women. once again, look at the gender gap. and, bang, especially college educated women in the suburbs, critical to the obama coalition. let's come back and look nationally by race. we saw this number last night, we knew governor romney in trouble. 72% of t

with the proposed arena on piers 30 and 32, written by john king, the architectural editor. i thought it was a well written article, but i can assure at least from my point of view mr. king expresses some concerns about the environmental review and its speed. and i can say that expedient and complete and thorough are not mutually exclusive, and you can do something and certainly i would expect the same analysis to be every bit as thorough. and this would be the case with any e-i-r, but that does not preclude it from moving in an expedient manner if it can be so done. and the other very interesting article by john wildermuth, very excellent journal on the housing wars, key to city's diversity, that's the title of it. he does talk a little bit the years of protest. it's well written, but a little self-laudatory in that we have a lot of problems, still a city which once had a huge middle class and had lots of families with children and had some of the highest sale prices of anyplace. we have to differentiate. i think these things he mentioned have done a lot of good things, stopp

analysts gloria borger, david gergen and chief national correspondent, john king. john, the campaigns say they are ready for late night waiting for ohio returns. what do the latest polls tell us? >> if you look at our new poll today, it tells you the campaigns are right. we've got essentially a dead heat. the president has a 50% to 47% for governor romney lead among likely voters. that's within the margin of error. if you look deep into the poll, they're tied among independents. the president is doing very well in cleveland and columbus, where he has to do well. governor romney's doing pretty well down here in the southwest corner of the state where i am and in the rural areas. where he needs to do well. both candidates are doing well where they need to do well. now they're just trying to turn up the energy and turn up the intensity which is why they're both here in the state today. they will both be back in the state today. if you look deep into our poll, you have a classic dead heat in the classic swing state. >> david, you were saying a couple days ago you thought the president was

yellin, and jim acosta and correspondent john king. >> the storm has been a real curveball for candidates. how has mitt romney been handling transitioning back to regular campaign mode? does he feel that it may have stopped his momentum? >> what we saw earlier from mitt romney, he went back on offense. after dialing back his criticism of president obama in the immediate aftermath of superstorm sandy, he went on the attack. he ridiculed the idea for the secretary and he unleashed this ad. a spanish language tv ad that linked president obama to hugo chavez and the castro family. i think the romney campaign at this point, they're not really staying one way or the other whether or not the campaign has been damaged to some sentence by what happened with hurricane sandy but i think the, getting back on offense does reflect the fact that they feel like they'd better get this momentum back on their side. clearly it has been affected. >> and president obama has obviously been in full presidential mode. he took a break from campaigning but he's been very visible. he is getting good marks hoist hand
